Children of Foster Carers Month: Sian Packham, aged 17.

Children of foster carers month: Sian in Kent

October marks Children of Foster Carers Month.

This national event celebrates the contributions that children of foster carers give to their fostering households.

We speak with Sian, aged 17 [just turned 18!] from Kent in this short film interview.

Gaining fostering experience

Sian initially appears fairly quiet and low-key, but as her teacher tells us, she 'lights up' as soon as she talks about fostering. Her household has been fostering for just over a year, and during that time they have had three Therapeutic Led Care Placements.

Sian says:

Being part of a foster family feels rewarding. You have a child move in with you, and it's offering a sense of security for them.

The role and responsibilities of a foster carer

Sian certainly plays a significant part in the family support that's given to their current young person. She fondly relays how he calls up the stairs for her to come and play [she clearly enjoys it!] and adds:

As he gets a bit older I reckon I can teach him some musical aspects, because he already loves to bang beats on the table, or he will play my guitar when I have it. I gave him my little drum pad and he absolutely loves it.

Fostering and Adoption

It appears that Sian has adjusted quite naturally to helping the different young people in her household, whether actively giving them her time and energy, or understanding when they need space and patience. We asked if she plans to foster in the future. She replied that she wouldn't foster, but:

I will definitely think about adopting a child of my own because I just feel like it's a nice thing - and because I was [adopted]. I'd like to give another child a better start in life like I had. So, just kind of keep it going.

Fostering as a Family

Sian's maturity is evident when she discusses her relationship with her parents. She explains how their patience has grown as a family, and she now knows to step back or take a breath in challenging home situations. She also adds:

I feel like I've almost grown closer to my parents with this, because I can help them out. If they are having a moment with a child, I can offer to stand in.
