In September, we celebrated our favourite day of the year, welcoming over 600 members of the Blue Sky Fostering community from across Devon and Cornwall, Hampshire, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, and Dorset. This vibrant gathering was filled with fun, games, and the opportunity to celebrate our young people's successes with the prestigious Blue Sky Awards, recognising those who have shown exceptional bravery and kindness throughout the year.
The Family Fun Day is a true team affair. Since its inception over five years ago, it has transformed from a small gathering of foster carers, staff, and families sharing food and activities into a large-scale organised event. This year, attendees enjoyed a variety of offerings, including three food stalls, animal encounters, and much more!
Abi, our Senior Administrator at Blue Sky, has played a pivotal role in organising the Fun Day for the past three years. She shares, “Every year, I want to make it better and better. We strive to be really creative and think outside the box with the types of activities we put on.”
Last year Helen Hurst - also an administrator with Blue Sky Fostering - assisted with the Fun Day, but this year, she took on a more significant role alongside Abi and co-workers Molly and Sophie. They were busy booking vendors and managing all the details, from archways of balloons to ensuring everything ran smoothly.
“As soon as it’s done, we take a week’s breather, and then we start thinking about next year!” Abi laughs.
Helen adds, “The day was jam-packed with delicious food, face painting, circus workshops, bracelet making, hair braiding, animal handling, skateboard demonstrations, inflatable activities, and much more. We even hosted a Blue Sky Bear trail, where the lucky winner received a seriously cute limited-edition version of our bear!”
One of our very own staff members, George, provided an incredible acoustic music set, creating the perfect ambience for the day.
Abi fondly recalls her favourite moment: “To finish off, we had the return of our iconic tug of war, which ended with the senior management team getting absolutely drenched with wet sponges. They were such good sports, and it certainly gave us all a laugh!”
A huge thank you to everyone involved who made the day so special. We can’t wait for next year when we will celebrate our 20th anniversary as a fostering agency!
Thank you to our wonderful administrators, Helen and Abi, for their help in writing this article.
